  con ganas de volver

sandra ortin, ES, 2009-06-09

  This was my first time

Donna Murphy, CA, 2008-07-01
This was my first time in Cuba and I will definitely be returning. The Melia Las Americas was fantastic. The beach was right there, the view was awesome, the buffet was excellent as were the A La Carte restaurants. I enjoyed the nightly entertainment and the day trip to Havana.

  Un Paraiso en la tierra

JAIME BARRERA REYES, MX, 2007-12-14

  Great Holiday- great people

Anónimo, CA, 2007-06-20
Well I must say I am surprised at some of the comments posted on this site recently

I was at the hotel between the 3-17th May 2007 and had a fabulous time. As a single traveller I rely on a good hotel to make the holiday for me and this was certainly the case.

I was allocated a 2nd floor room which had great views of the golf course it was clean and well maintained with the fridge stocked daily and any maintenance issues sorted within a couple of hours. it even had a free safe

When you first get to the hotel it looks imposing and believe me its massive. Despite only have 340 rooms the grounds are extensive; you will have great fun exploring. I was finding little places a week after I got there. Although it isn't well advertised the hotel does offer an orientation tour of the facilities and I would take them up on the offer.

Food wise, for the first time in a number of years I never experienced any stomach problems, normally I put it down to over indulgence with the rich food and the odd rum etc. Although I ate in the buffet most evenings I found there to be quite a good selection and if I requested anything additional the chefs where always accommodating and cooked something fresh. I did try the Japanese which was OK but really not to my pallet (a good evening though) but the A la Carte was really good; definitely try the lobster and the chocolate truffles. In addition most hotels of this type do say they offer 24 hr food, and this was the case I was at the bar one evening and we requested club sandwiches and fries at 3am and out they came.

The beach is great (700mtrs of it) it's clean and well maintained lots of activities however if you want a quite time head of to the left areas of the beach where you can really chill out. At the weekend you sometimes get some of the local families using the beach area near the Du Pont but they are never any bother.

Just a quick note about the sunset, for all you romantics out there you have got to visit the Du Pont about 1930 to watch the sunset, have a look at the photos and you will see what I mean.

For all you golfers the course is a must. The course is very forgiving and would suit all standards. There a couple of holes which will try the patience of a saint ( 15th -16th-8th) but all in all the course in is very good condition and for the most part I played the course with no body else on the course( and no it wasn't because my golf was that bad).

A couple of tips for you all , bring a slack handful of balls and tees and a glove, The hire clubs are Taylor Made and in good condition, however to hire the clubs is 33CUP and the buggy is 33CUP. If you on a 14 day Virgin holiday then the green fees are free when you pick up a chit from the hotel

Varadero is a great place to visit; I would recommend the sightseeing bus which you can catch just by the roundabout. It coast 5CUP for the day per person and it takes you all over. I would suggest you get of down town by Al Capone's house have a bimble and catch the bus again and go from flee market to flee market, and don't forget the cigar and rum shop and the top of the strip. (If you read this Mary Ann - I will never forget the phase (don't worry it's just around the corner)

If you like cigars I would advise using the government shops, where I found you can get a bargain and you know what you're getting. It only takes 1 cigar made of banana leaves to convince you of this.

Other trips to consider are the Catamaran, which isn't the best in world (only 1/2 hr of snorkelling) but the food is good and island is nice. I would suggest you get a good base tan before you try this one because in can get red hot.

Loads of trips to Havana, I did the 1 day special which was good but a long day, most people I spoke too recommended the overnighter, which gives you more time to explore the old quarter. Incidentally I have found that when you get on visits such as these you find yourself being intimidated my local. From my experience I found the Cuban people very friendly and they welcome you warmly. I never once felt threatened during any of my visits and if I'm honest I felt safer in Cuba that I would walking around some of the cities in the UK.

Finally I would like to thanks all the lovely people I met during my stay who made my stay that little bit special Ron and Lin -Cathy and Jim- Cathy and Jackie- Randy and Mary Anne and the many others, to you many thanks. I would like to say a special thanks to Reynaldo Leon from the hotel, thanks for the golfing lessons!!!!!! It's a shame the only day it rained was during out round, hopefully I will be back again.

In conclusion I would like to say thank you Melia Las Americas for a great holiday and wonderful hospitality, I would have no hesitation in recommending you to my friends.
